Books, Books, Books: Recommendations from top PMMs

I asked some best PMMs out there for book recommendations. Here they are (in a random order):

Contact by Carl Sagan

“It’s important for product marketers to read fiction and get into really expansive stuff. It gets the mind piecing together a lot of moving parts, dealing with past present and future. Reading science fiction has made me a better go-to-market strategist.”
– Jess Petrella

Sales Pitch by April Dunford

“It’s short and impactful”
– Richard King

“Sales is having a historically bad time converting. This book will pragmatically help PMMs convert their positioning/messaging into something tangible that sales can use.”
– Rowan Noronha

Storyworthy by Matthew Dicks

“It is not written specifically for business, but to help people understand what makes a great story. It teaches the concept of the 5-second story. At the heart of any great story, no matter how big, is a five-second moment of transformation or realisation.”
– Elliott Rayner

Atomic Habits by James Clear

“It was one of the rare books that changed my life. Developing and stacking habits, building routines to get closer to long-term goals, and developing a mindset that “done is better than perfect” not only guided my writing journey but also significantly contributed to the quality of my life, relationships, and well-being.”
– Maja Voje

The Obstacle is the Way by Ryan Holiday

“It’s work-adjacent but great reading for this time of year when you want to be a bit more reflective.”
– Tamara Grominsky

Predatory Thinking by Dave Trott

“A great one I always recommend. It gives great practical advice on business and a lot of concepts related to product marketing, but all through practical stories and anecdotes. Every chapter is 1-2 pages so it’s also fun to read.”
– Jason Oakley

How Will You Measure Your Life? by Clayton M. Christensen

“If you feel stuck or lost or need guidance as you start the new year, this book is for you. In this book, the late Harvard professor Clay Christensen provides the tools to help you understand how to live a meaningful life by applying business principles. The most powerful motivator of life isn’t money; it’s the opportunity to learn, grow in responsibilities, contribute, and be recognized.”
– Yi Lin Pei

Crossing the Chasm by Geoffrey A. Moore
“Every product marketer should be pretty knowledgeable about the beachhead strategy in my opinion.”
– Anthony Pierri

The Almanack of Naval Ravikant by Eric Jorgenson

“Short, impactful and really makes you think about what our motivations are to be happy and going after wealth. I feel like that’s a great one since it’s a good time to reset for the next year and I’ll probably read it again.”
– Gab Bujold

Everybody Writes by Ann Handley
“Writing for impact in the remote/hybrid era is way behind the curve. Something we all need to do better and do now.”
– Harvey Lee

And here is the book I am reading:

Leonardo da Vinci by Walter Isaacson

As product marketers, we may often fall into data analysis, granular improvement, and continuous innovation — making things better one step at a time. That’s why I feel really inspired by reading about such a genius who, with his extraordinary creative thinking, is naturally drawn to disruptive invention. Also, Walter Isaacson is great at distilling Da Vinci’s genius way of thinking even after over 500 years.

Don’t feel bad for how many books you haven’t read. You will never read them all. Just pick one and have fun reading.
