I just watched this Starter Story on Youtube. David Bressler built an AI tool, ‘Excel Formula Bot’, which creates an Excel function for you based on a description.
How did he gain traction?
A single Reddit post on the ‘InternetIsBeautiful’ subreddit earned him 11k upvotes.
He simply posted: “Free AI bot that gives you the Excel formula based on a given prompt/sentence” – without any description, just a link to access the tool.
Think about it for a sec: his value proposition was so strong, he only needed the Reddit title to explain it.
How many benefits are in the title?
Zero. What he did was explain what it does for the user – its capability.
What if the shorter the value proposition, the stronger it is?
If you need to wrap it in too many words to explain what the product does, there’s a good chance your product isn’t unique, different, and lacks a clear value.
The same can be true for product discovery.
If you can describe what the product will do in a few words, there’s a good chance you will develop a product which targeted at one thing, instead of building a Jack-of-all-trades product.
So, when ideating a new product or developing a value proposition, write the Reddit title for it and ask yourself:
Would this short Reddit post title be enough to get people excited about my product?
